Tax-Aide volunteers make a difference

The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Program has been preparing taxes in Alaska for approximately 40 years. Counselors of this program prepare a basic tax return free for seniors and mid to low income citizens in Alaska. We need volunteers to help at the sites in Alaska for the coming tax season.

A taxpayer came to one of the sites in Anchorage very anxious about owing a large sum of money in taxes and was not going to be able to pay the amount. The counselor worked through the return and was able to tell the taxpayer that a $75 refund would be coming in the mail. The taxpayer became very emotional and there wasn’t a dry eye among those taxpayers waiting. This is why we volunteer for this program. Each taxpayer gets the full amount from the refund and this money will help the family in many ways.

No prior tax experience is needed but being comfortable using a computer is necessary. All materials and comprehensive training are provided by AARP and Internal Revenue Service instructors. Tax counselors attend 40 hours of classroom training starting in December with a break for the holidays. Tax preparation starts in February through April 15.

If you can be a volunteer to prepare taxes for citizens of Alaska please go to aarp.org/taxaide and complete an application. You will be contacted by an AARP Tax-Aide representative with more information. The beginning AARP Tax-Aide class will start Thursday Dec. 18.
