Anchorage quilt show highlights local talent

The 2017 Great Alaska Quilt Show, sponsored by the Anchorage Log Cabin Quilters Guild, will be held at the ConocoPhillips Alaska Atrium at 700 G Street, September 16 and 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. More information is available at anchoragelogcabinquilters.blogspot.com.

Well over 100 quilts will be displayed by members. A "Small Quilt" silent auction will be held during the show and winners will be announced after 2 p.m. on Sunday. Also on Sunday, at 3:30 p.m., there will be a drawing for a beautiful "Moonlight Garden" Raffle Quilt. Members will be presenting various demonstrations during both days of the show.

Anchorage Log Cabin Quilters Guild was chartered in 1983. This year we will feature five charter members, Ramona Chinn, Doris Rhodes, Louise Bremmer, Lynne Wince and Pat Sims, who remain in Anchorage.

Ramona was the first guild president. Arriving in Alaska in 1974, Ramona found fabric for quilts was rare and difficult to find. Ramona's quilts are appliqued or hand pieced. Her work has been published in numerous books and magazines.

World traveler Doris Rhodes has traveled with quilt groups visiting foreign quilt shows for many years. Doris makes bed quilts by machine and hand quilts them. A favorite is her beautiful Tepee Quilt.

Hand quilter Louise Bremmer became inspired with quilting when she saw a quilt display in 1979. She got the kit and made the quilt. She makes large quilts and is well known for her beautiful small quilts.

Traditional quilter Lynne Wince enjoys making pieced and hand applique quilts, winning awards at the Alaska State Fair. She started quilting in 1970 and recently finished a quilt for a new great granddaughter.

Pat Sims says, "My love of sewing found a good match with ALCQ! Thanks to all for years of friendships."

Marilyn Galbraith is an ALCQ member.
