Houston senior center reopens for lunches

Thanks to an arrangement with Wasilla Area Seniors, Inc. (WASI), the Mid-Valley Senior Center in Houston is open for lunch again. WASI started catering lunch to the Houston center in April, with lunch hours 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. A comment on the Mid-Valley Senior Center’s Facebook page notes “coffee is ready about 10 a.m., so come in for a cup”.

Mid-Valley Senior Center ceased operations almost four years ago and has been trying to find ways to restore services since then. A private kitchen began offering meals to the seniors and veterans at the center in 2018 but was unable to continue, explains an article in WASI’s April newsletter. WASI CEO Chuck Foster is quoted in the article: “Considering the cost of delivering meals on wheels to clients in the (Houston) area, and considering new funding just made available through the Mat-Su Health Foundation, we thought it was the right time to do this.”

The Mid-Valley Senior Center’s Facebook page has been posting the menu each week in advance, showing daily offerings.

“Mid Valley looks at this as a new beginning for the center being able to keep the building open longer hours,” says one of the center’s Facebook posts. “We are working on a new membership application and trust that the community will want to become more actively involved in the center.”

Volunteers are needed. Mid-Valley Senior Center’s phone number is 907-892-6114 or call Patsy Tampke, 907-841-6720, and their Facebook page ID is @midvalleyseniorcenter.

WASI’s phone number is 907-376-3104.
