Hospice events to help navigate the holidays

The air is crisp, heaters are running full blast, and Hospice of Anchorage is gearing up for this wonderful season of giving. While we continue to provide in-home support to individuals and families dealing with a life-limiting illness free of charge (primarily funded through the Senior In-Home Grant, and in part by generous donors), we also have wonderful events coming up that we would love for you to be a part of this winter.

Navigating the Holidays

On Wednesday, Nov. 13 from 7 to 9 p.m., Hospice of Anchorage, Providence Hospice and Frontier Hospice join forces to host a workshop for anyone entering the holiday season after the loss of a loved one. Interacting with relatives and friends, attending social gatherings, taking part in traditions, shopping, decorating—it can be so overwhelming. We invite you to join us as we discuss ways to make holiday plans that make sense for you where you’re at now. This event will be held at the First Congregational Church, 2610 E. Northern Lights Blvd., in the common room. All are welcome to attend this free program.

Remembrance Tree

From Nov. 29 through Dec. 24, we will host our annual Remembrance Tree memorial at the Dimond Center Mall. This tradition started in the 1980s and allows individuals an opportunity to honor the memory of a loved one while supporting the work of Hospice of Anchorage. We invite you to both donate to have an ornament with your loved ones’ name on it hung on the tree, as well as volunteer to sit at the booth helping others participate. Consider signing up with a friend to offer this ritual of comfort to the community. New volunteers are warmly welcomed and there are many shifts to choose from, each with two open slots (only one slot needs to be filled per shift). The volunteer’s job is to be a friendly face that listens to people that may want to share about their loved ones, and to take donations for ornaments. No expertise is expected – simple support by your presence is all that is needed.

Please call if you have any questions or need some extra support in the home. Hospice of Anchorage wishes you a fantastic November and Thanksgiving.
