Alaska sport fish season still open

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game announced on Monday that sport and personal use fishing will remain open for the 2020 season, as long as individuals stay in compliance with State of Alaska public health mandates.

In a media release, the department stated that “Although travel between communities is prohibited under issued health mandates, the public may still travel to fishing locations,” provided that ADF&G guidelines are followed:

1. Fishing activities should occur as close to home residences as possible

2. Local mandates may be authorized under Public Health Mandate 012. Find out local mandates in communities before travel, and abide by them. ( https://gov.alaska.gov/home/covid19-healthmandates/ )

3. Trips must be completely provisioned from the community of origin. Don’t plan on buying food, drinks or even fuel (if possible) once the trip is underway, and until the return home

4. Practice social and physical distancing while sport or personal use fishing

5. It is highly advised that anglers wear face coverings as suggested in Health Alert 010 issued April 3, 2020.

Alaska Department of Fish and Game further stated that “Adherence to these stipulations will allow Alaskans the opportunity to fish, and put food on their tables, while taking measures to protect public health and allow time to build needed health infrastructure.”

Subsistence fishing remains open and unrestricted, under the issued health mandates.
