Senior Voice wins awards
Senior Voice has been recognized for excellence, winning two awards in the annual contest sponsored by the North American Mature Publishers Association (NAMPA), a nationwide network of publishers focusing on boomer and senior readers. Awards were announced Oct. 7, 2020, at the annual NAMPA conference, held virtually online this year.
Entries were independently judged by the University of Missouri School of Journalism in Columbia, Missouri, who gave awards in categories based on the circulation size of the publication. Senior Voice entries competed in Division A, for circulations below 25,000.
Senior Voice won first place in the Best Cover Photo category, for photographer Michael Dinneen's captivating shot of Anchorage pool player Linda Cameron (see photo), commissioned for the February 2020 cover.
Senior Voice earned a second place award in the Senior Issues category for stories on nutrition by frequent contributor Leslie Shallcross, who has won awards for her Senior Voice articles in the past. Judges wrote, "Leslie Shallcross offers congratulations to folks who have made it to their advanced years, but she adds a warning that it's time to pay more attention by helping your body with better diets and nutrition. Her columns are packed with information about how to consume the best nutrition to preserve and build better selves."
Senior Voice is a publication of Older Persons Action Group, Inc., an Alaska nonprofit organization that serves Alaska seniors and their families. OPAG has been publishing Senior Voice for 40 years and is partially funded by a grant administered through the Alaska Dept. of Health and Social Services.
